OUR STORY

From Survival to a Lifelong Craft

Groom Curriculum’s roots began before co-founder Sierra Elbert was even born. Her mother, facing adversity, was given an informal second chance when a probation officer introduced her to dog grooming. What started as a way to simply “survive” became a lifelong career. Growing up in her mother’s salon, Sierra and her siblings learned the trade firsthand and developed a deep respect for the craft.

At just 17, Sierra opened her own grooming salon, drawing on instinct, tradition, and her mother’s lessons. But the sudden loss of her younger brother shifted her path. Seeking purpose, she turned her focus to grooming education, attending trade shows, learning new techniques, and experiencing how structured education could transform the industry.

A Calling to Teach

At Iowa Lakes Community College, Sierra spent more than two years training groomers as an instructor without a formal curriculum. Her approach was live and case-based: complete each dog’s groom as it arrived and teach the relevant techniques in real time. She guided students as they built confidence, skills, and careers, yet recognized there was more to be done. The experience made the gap clear: there was no adoptable, standards-based curriculum the college could implement.

The Founding of Groom Curriculum

The vision came to life at a family reunion. Sierra joined forces with Patricia A. Pierce, M.Ed., and Shelby Mitchell, combining grooming expertise, educational leadership, and design to launch Groom Curriculum, the first standardized, college-accredited grooming education platform in the U.S
